Is it best to start a new bank account online or at the actual bank?

I want to start a new checking account at National City. I don't have the money right now to put in the account that i wish to start..How long does the online account give you to put money in there?
Is it best to start a new bank account online or at the actual bank?
I personally am unaware that you can open a checking account online. Usually it's done in person so that the bank has a 'signature card' signed by you on file.
