How do I get my old Internet Service Provider to stop taking money from my bank account?

I'm not sure whether to put this question in 'Legal' or 'Internet' but my old ISP keeps taking money from my account even though I don't use them any more. My bank won't cancel the payments and I've given trying to cancel over the phone. So in effect, I'm paying for two ISPs but only using one of them. It's a case of knowing what my rights are, I think, and knowing what to say over the phone etc. Can anyone help please?

First of all, keep very tight and accurate records of the calls you make. Who you talk to, what they say, what you say, times, dates, etc... Then keep calling the ISP and ask to speak to supervisors or tell them the situation and that you canceled long ago etc... Get a confirmation number for the cancellation or ask for some proof that you've actually canceled your account.





Be friendly at first, but if they don't help you (your ISP) tell them you'll be contacting the Better Business Bureau and the police shortly after that. If you still can't get anything done, do just that. The BBB can help you find the next course of action which may be contacting an attorney by that time.





One other thing you could try is closing your bank account, but to me this is letting them win and is too much of an inconvenience. Oh, and who's your ISP so we can all stay away from them?





If you can record your conversations with them, that would also help to document things. If you record them saying you're canceled that's true power on your side. You can also document the story and record the calls and post all that to a web site. Pass that along to people and it'll spread like wildfire and bad PR can get companies to do the right thing.

Reply:Sounds like your bank is well out of order,it's your account and your money,don't understand them. Try with bank again and ask to speak to a manager, if no joy there then go to the banks ombudsman.Put everything in writing too
Reply:If your bank won't help you you need a new bank period.
Reply:First take enough money out of your account then say you have lost your card then say to make sure close my account and open a new one ,you will then have new card(s),new account isp cannot get any money because your old account is closed,it is a bit of a problem but this way works,
Reply:talk to your bank and tell them to stop payemnts to your old ISP and also call your old ISP and ask them a refund of those payments .

Reply:This is silly, of course the bank will stop the payments.. go in and speak to someone in person.. it's your money and you have the right to pay or not pay who ever you like..





If they say they can't (which they wont) change your bank
Reply:Call them and ask tell them that you want to discontinue their service and to please stop withdrawing the money from your account
Reply:Call your old ISP and tell them once again, you no longer want their services. Also, send them a certified letter. Take a copy of this letter to your bank, ask to talk to someone other than a teller. Advise them that you have been loosing money and are closing the loose ends.





If the bank sees fit to pay this ISP again from your account, an attorney will be in contact with the bank.
Reply:Your bank should cancel the payments. If they won't, set up internet banking and cancel them yourself. But the bank should cancel them, try speaking to them again.
Reply:If its a Direct Debit not a standing order then your bank is wrong and so is your old ISP.


Go to Trading Standards and tell them. Take all the paperwork.


If its a direct debit your bank have to refund you the money so get the cancellation notice to them in writing first thing Monday morning!
Reply:I agree to change banks. This problem is becoming increasingly frequent in this world of using charge cards instead of real money.
Reply:Your bank has to cancel any payment you tell them too....what on earth are you on about.
Reply:If you go to your bank in person they HAVE to take your instructions to cancel any d/d or s/o...its the LAW!





Threaten them with the banking ombudsmen if they get funny!





AND...if you can prove that you have requested this from the bank before, they HAVE to repay you the money that has been taken.
